Giving Back. There are many ways for even the smallest of businesses to give back. I mean, if it weren't for your community, how would your business exist? Community doesn't necessarily have to be your immediate surrounding, but whoever your audience is. Showing the people that you care is an excellent way not only to enhance your audience and gain business, but to gain self gratitude for doing something good. Community could also include who you are affecting around your business, like Amazon bringing jobs or bringing more stress to a city. The following is an excellent format to show that you care about the community you are involved with and want to give back:
1. If you choose to go forth with donations, MAKE THEM COUNT. Your small charities are just as important as your large charities. Making this world a better place is a team effort. We are all working towards the same goal. RESEARCH WHERE YOUR DONATIONS ARE GOING.
2. If you are able to, offering your services for free to specific organizations is a great way of giving back. Free labor is service that will never go unnoticed. Research organizations that peak your interest, and reach out to them! Half the battle with owning a business is building a network. This type of service comes in three forms: Money, Knowledge, or Time. You can choose which one may fit your ambitions.
3. Go directly to the community in need. Volunteer for services that are out of your business realm. Go volunteer at a food kitchen with your team! Take this opportunity to hear your employees' passions, and volunteer in areas related to them. Maybe you don't want to volunteer but know of individuals going through a rough time. Invite them over for Lunch! Make extras for leftovers.
4. Reward your employees for helping out when ON THE CLOCK. That's right. Pay them for a day to go help in a food kitchen or remove trash from a local park. Give your employees the opportunity to BRING A PROJECT TO YOU. If you think you have all the ideas and know where this company needs to go, you might have a bit of an ego. Realize that everyone has something to offer. You hired your employee, empower them. That not only will help the community, but your employees will love you even more.
5. Do not take on projects you are not passionate about. Be creative, but maintain a strategic mindset. It would be great to donate one of your products or services, but will it hurt you? Understand the instant and long term ramifications it will have on your business and employees.
Spread the rewards you have benefited by owning/running a business to the community. It not only will help your business flourish, but will help the mental health of you, your employees, and the community. Go out and make a difference!
